Fire Sprinklers: Standard or Quick Response?
Different fire sprinkler types are designed for different buildings. Choosing the correct fire sprinklers for your specific workplace can have a great impact on your company's fire protection system. Types of sprinklers all differ according to temperature activation, orifice size, water distribution pressure, where and how installation takes place, response timing, service and thermal sensitivity.
There are two main types of sprinkler heads: standard response (SR) and quick response (QR).
Standard response sprinkler heads pre-wet nearby materials and reduce heat to prevent a fire from spreading. The fire eventually dies once it has burnt the fuel close by. The SR sprinkler heads do not all activate in the case of a fire; instead, only the sprinkler heads above the fire are activated.
Quick response sprinkler heads are used for light hazard applications. They have a higher discharge pattern than the SR heads. This enables ceiling cooling, the prevention of flash-over in a fire and increases human survival chances. These sprinkler heads are ideal for highly populated buildings such as health care facilities, residential occupancies and company buildings.
The difference between SR and QR sprinkler heads is the thermal sensitivity. QR heads have a quicker activation response.
