MIC is a microorganism that may be affecting the pipes in your sprinkler system. Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) is now a worldwide term; it is becoming increasingly prevalent. There are three main causes for the rising number of MIC cases in commercial fire sprinkler systems:
The damage is not directly caused by the MIC microorganisms; however, different chemicals that accelerate rusting or corrosion in pipes are caused by their biological processes. Incidences of MIC have now been reported worldwide, especially in warm weather areas. To combat MIC, companies spend billions on chemical treatments every year.
The key to preserving your sprinkler system is early detection and preventative treatment. So just what should you be doing?
1. Piping should be flushed. Oil and debris, which is potential food for microorganisms, need to be removed. Newer systems flush more easily as a result of their modern designs.
2. Systems need to be tested and drained as infrequently as possible as fresh water is likely to bring in more food for the microorganisms.
3. Thicker wall piping should be installed, especially if your pipes are MIC prone.
4. Water tests should be utilised; you should not comply rely on these tests to detect MIC leaks. Watch for leaks at the pipe's joints but keep in mind that microorganisms usually occur in small percentages; therefore, water tests are not conclusive.
